What are some environmental volunteering opportunities? Before we start, let’s set the scene. It’s pretty self-explanatory to say trees are important to the environment. It’s on the news: trees absorb carbon dioxide. It’s taught in schools: trees are important habitats that preserve biodiversity. But did you know the specific importance of chestnut trees in the ecosystem?
The American chestnut was a foundation species of the eastern American forest, stretching from Maine to Mississippi. However, after these trees were exposed to the chestnut blight fungus in the 19th century, the pathogen spread rapidly and completely wiped out the American chestnut. This was devastating, not only because it was a foundation species (meaning American chestnuts had a disproportionately larger role in structuring their community), but also because the tree was key to building homes and providing nutrition. While this story demonstrates the consequences of human intervention in nature, it also highlights the possibility of humans undoing these impacts.
Introducing: The American Chestnut Foundation, or TACF for short. TACF is on a mission to restore the iconic American chestnut tree to its rightful place in Eastern U.S. forests. Combining cutting-edge biotechnology with traditional breeding techniques, TACF is developing disease-resistant chestnut trees to combat the threats of chestnut blight and Phytophthora root rot. Their comprehensive approach includes planting genetically diverse, resilient trees to ensure long-term forest health and sustainability. Committed to education, TACF also raises awareness through youth programs, public talks, and outreach activities, inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders to join their efforts in revitalizing these vital forests. In fact, science and education is an important aspect of TACF, and the wide array of information and resources on their website helped me write this blog. Their mission is to restore the American chestnut to its native range. It is through this mission that they hope to see a robust eastern forest returned to its splendor.
There are many ways to get involved with this incredible organization. You can receive American chestnut seeds or seedlings, attend one of their online speaker events, or submit to one of their many contests (such as possibly presenting research at the annual American Chestnut Symposium). Another significant way you can engage with TACF is by volunteering! You can take on volunteering in planting, harvesting, outreach, event coordination, and much more. The application for being a volunteer is here. To support the organization, become a member to receive up-to-date information in TACF’s research and join one of their local chapters. The opportunities are truly endless. We hope this was helpful to any environmentally passionate youth hoping to take on leadership opportunities!
